Home Earth Alliance joins Sustainable Saratoga for their fall Pollinator Palooza Pop Up Native Plant Sale, Sunday, October 4th.
Now is the best to plant native perennials and get a head start on your summer 2027 pollinator gardens before winter sets in!
Though most people think of planting as a springtime activity, fall is actually a better time to plant indigenous perennials. Night time temperatures are cooling down, but the soil is still warm enough for the plants to grow right up until the first hard frost. Transplant shock is reduced at cooler temperatures, and the autumnal chill and shorter day lengths signals the plants to put their growth into roots, not leaves. There are fewer weeds and insect herbivores in the fall than in the early part of the growing season, so the plants are less stressed by competition and predation. Fall planting helps native perennials get off to a strong start in the spring and provides an early food source for insect pollinators waking up hungry in April and May.
All plants will be provided by Home Earth Alliance’s IMAGINE Native Plant Farm - grown from seeds collected by botanists from abundant wild populations here in the greater Capital District, so perfectly adapted to this ecoregion and our native bees, butterflies, and other insect pollinators.
